Eye Exam for glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a serious condition that damages your optic nerve due to a buildup of intraocular pressure (IOP) inside of your eye. Known as “the silent thief of sight,” glaucoma often won’t present obvious symptoms until after it causes permanent damage, and if left untreated, it can lead to vision loss and even blindness. Our team at Lowcountry Eye Care values your vision as much as you do, so we screen for glaucoma during our comprehensive eye exams so we can diagnose it early and get you started on a customized treatment plan as soon as possible.

Types of Glaucoma: Open-Angle and
Angle-Closure

While there are multiple types of glaucoma, the two most common are known as open-angle and angle-closure. Open-angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage path between your cornea and iris becomes blocked, leading to the buildup of fluid and high IOP. Angle-closure glaucoma is rare but more urgent. It’s caused by a restricted iris or completely clogged drainage path that prevents fluid from circulating, which causes your IOP to increase rapidly.
