Eye Exam for glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a serious condition that damages your optic nerve due to a buildup of intraocular pressure (IOP) inside of your eye. Known as “the silent thief of sight,” glaucoma often won’t present obvious symptoms until after it causes permanent damage, and if left untreated, it can lead to vision loss and even blindness. Our team at Lowcountry Eye Care values your vision as much as you do, so we screen for glaucoma during our comprehensive eye exams so we can diagnose it early and get you started on a customized treatment plan as soon as possible.

Types of Glaucoma: Open-Angle and
Angle-Closure

While there are multiple types of glaucoma, the two most common are known as open-angle and angle-closure. Open-angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage path between your cornea and iris becomes blocked, leading to the buildup of fluid and high IOP. Angle-closure glaucoma is rare but more urgent. It’s caused by a restricted iris or completely clogged drainage path that prevents fluid from circulating, which causes your IOP to increase rapidly.

Early Detection and Management of Glaucoma

At Lowcountry Eye Care, we diagnose and treat glaucoma on a regular basis, and we believe that the best treatment starts with early detection and prevention. That’s why our experienced doctors use advanced technology during your comprehensive eye exams to detect glaucoma’s signs early. If we find any cause for concern, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan to help you manage the disease and limit its potential impact on your vision.

Cutting Edge Diagnostic Technology

While you won’t notice the early signs of glaucoma, you can leave it to our experienced team to spot them before they can affect your vision. We use state-of the-art equipment like the iCare tonometer to comfortably measure your IOP — no uncomfortable air puffs required! Plus, we’ll compare Optos scans between each visit to monitor the long-term effects IOP has on your retina. Whether you’re being screened for glaucoma for the first time or need a personalized plan to manage your condition, we have you covered with our advanced tech and unparalleled expertise.

Trust Our Expert Doctors

At Lowcountry Eye Care, you can rest assured the doctors treating you aren’t just experts on ocular disease, they’re also experts on your eyes and personalizing your care! My daughter and I had such a wonderful experience at our eye appointment. We were met with such friendly, caring faces!!! We saw Dr. Salter and her amazing staff. Felt so comfortable with our eye care and they are very passionate about their jobs! Jeana was hilariously honest with her opinion on picking our glasses. I LOVED her honesty. Everyone there was amazing and so friendly. They were also very upfront with the pricing/cost of services, which was a nice change. No surprises. Would definitely recommend this practice.

I have been coming to Lowcountry Eye Care for years. Based on the days that I make my appointment I don't always see the same doctor. That being said, I have always had a great experience, whether it was with Dr.Pitcavage,Dr.Shealey or Dr. McCormack. Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Vitta. She made me feel right at home during my visit and was able to help and advise me with some of my allergy concerns.I would also like to thank Shanna for being so patient with helping me pick out the right frames. She was right about which frames to choose and I am happy with the choices that I made. Thanks to Morgan for explaining all about the floaters.I can't imaging going anywhere else for my eye care needs. SG

If you need an eye doctor, look no further! This place has it all: friendly staff, yep! Updated technology, yep! Large selection of frames for any budget, yep! Petting zoo, ye……!! okay…they don’t have a petting zoo. They are extremely thorough and make sure that you get the best solution for your peepers. I’ve seen lots of the doctors since I’ve been going there, most recently; Dr Vitta - and she was awesome!
