Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatment at Lowcountry Eye Care

Macular Degeneration

What Is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is condition where your macula wears down as you age. This part of your eye is responsible for your central vision and its deterioration affects your ability to see fine details. While it’s rare to go completely blind, AMD can cause significant vision loss and make it difficult to complete daily activities like driving or reading. Once your vision is damaged, it can’t be reversed, but there are steps we can take to help you slow or prevent the onset of this disease.

The Primary Types of Macular Degeneration: Dry and Wet

AMD comes in two forms, dry and wet, and they vary in severity and the time it takes for them to develop. The most common form, dry AMD develops slowly over time and doesn’t have many noticeable symptoms, but it can eventually lead to blind spots, blurry central vision, distorted eyesight, and increased light sensitivity. Wet AMD occurs when unhealthy blood vessels grow beneath the retina, causing them to leak onto the macula. This produces sudden, severe vision loss and is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Early Detection and
Management of AMD

At Lowcountry Eye Care, our experienced doctors know the key to safeguarding your eyesight is through early detection. We use advanced diagnostic technology during our regular comprehensive eye exams to closely examine your eyes for early signs of AMD — or to determine if you have certain risk factors that may lead to developing it. The sooner we screen for AMD, the sooner we can develop a customized treatment plan to limit its progression and the potential impact it can have on your vision.
