Contact Lens Fitting: Same-Day Options, Expectations, and Patient FAQs
What Is a Contact Lens Fitting?
A contact lens fitting is a dedicated appointment where your optometrist checks your prescription, evaluates eye health, and helps choose the lens type that matches your daily routine. At Lowcountry Eye Care, this includes a conversation about comfort needs, dryness, lifestyle factors, and specialty lens options when appropriate.
Your doctor places trial lenses on your eyes so you can experience how they feel and see how well you see with them. After that, a technician teaches you how to insert, remove, clean, and care for your lenses based on your lens type. The process is hands-on and designed to help you feel confident before you leave the office.
Can I Get a Same-Day Contact Lens Exam and Fitting?
Yes. Lowcountry Eye Care aims to complete your contact lens exam and fitting on the same day. When you request your appointment, let the staff know you want a fitting included so the visit can be scheduled with the right amount of time.
The only exception happens when your prescription requires specialty trial lenses that aren’t currently in the office. In those cases, the lenses are ordered, and we bring you back as soon as they arrive.
What Does a First-Time Contact Lens Fitting Look Like?
Many first-time wearers, including teens, feel nervous before their visit. Our team makes the process calm, simple, and encouraging from start to finish.
Here’s what to expect:
- A doctor evaluation
Your prescription and eye health are checked, and the doctor recommends lens designs that suit your comfort and vision needs. - Trial lenses placed on your eyes
You’ll feel what lenses are like while your doctor evaluates the fit and clarity. - A step-by-step tutorial
A technician teaches you how to insert and remove your lenses safely. If your lenses are reusable, you’ll also learn proper cleaning and storage. You’ll stay in the office until you feel comfortable and ready.
Some patients learn the technique in minutes, while others need a longer session. Both are completely normal.
Are There Support Options for First-Time Wearers Who Struggle?
Yes. If you need extra help with insertion or removal after your first visit, you can return for additional guidance. Comfort and safety always come first, and our team is here to help until everything feels natural.
What Are the Best Contact Lenses for Dry Eye?
Dry eye is a common concern during contact lens fittings. For many people, daily disposable lenses provide the best comfort because each pair is fresh and free of buildup that could irritate the eyes.
Lowcountry Eye Care also fits scleral lenses, which hold a layer of hydrating saline beneath the surface of the lens. These lenses are FDA-approved for dry eye treatment and often help patients who cannot tolerate traditional contacts.
Your doctor will help determine which option fits your eyes best.
Do You Offer Contact Lens Fittings for Astigmatism or Presbyopia?
Yes. Many patients with astigmatism or near-focus changes have been told elsewhere that they are not candidates for contacts. At Lowcountry Eye Care, these patients are often great candidates.
We routinely fit:
- Toric lenses for astigmatism
- Multifocal lenses for presbyopia
These designs help patients see clearly at every distance without relying on glasses full-time.
How Do I Know Whether Contacts or Glasses Are Better for Me?
The simplest way to decide is to come in for an exam. Your doctor evaluates your prescription, eye health, dryness level, and daily activities to help you choose. Many people use both glasses and contacts depending on the moment.
Do You Offer Daily, Extended Wear, and Specialty Options?
Yes. Lowcountry Eye Care carries:
- Daily disposables
- One-week, two-week, and monthly lenses
- Gas permeable lenses
- Scleral lenses
Many lenses are stocked in the office, and specialty designs can be ordered quickly.
Can Teens Get Contact Lenses?
Yes. There is no strict age requirement. Instead, readiness depends on responsibility. Most teens do well starting at about twelve to thirteen years old. Our team teaches them everything they need to know and ensures they feel confident before going home.
Do You Offer Trials for New Prescriptions?
Yes. Trial lenses are a routine part of the fitting process. They help confirm that comfort and clarity meet the patient’s needs before a final prescription is written.
How Long Does a Contact Lens Fitting Appointment Take?
For returning contact lens wearers, the fitting adds about five to ten minutes to a standard eye exam.
For first-time wearers, the tutorial and practice session can take thirty minutes to an hour. Everyone learns at their own pace.
Are Contact Lens Fittings Covered by Insurance?
Coverage varies by insurance plan. Our staff reviews your benefits and explains your coverage before the fitting begins.
Do You Sell Contact Lens Solutions or Supplies?
Yes. The practice offers solutions for both soft and specialty lenses. While cases aren’t sold as retail items, patients who need one in an emergency can receive one.
Do You Offer Home Delivery for Contact Lenses?
Yes. When patients order a six-month supply or more, contact lenses ship directly to their home. Smaller orders can be picked up in the office.
Can I Sleep or Swim in My Contact Lenses?
Sleeping or swimming in contacts can increase irritation and infection risk. Some extended-wear lenses are approved for nighttime use, but that decision depends on your health and must be made with your doctor. For most patients, removing contacts before bed and before swimming is the safest choice.
