The Patient’s Guide to Comprehensive Eye Exams
What happens during a comprehensive eye exam?
A comprehensive eye exam at Lowcountry Eye Care is a medical evaluation of your total ocular health, not just a vision screening.
While a screening only checks if you can read a chart, our full examinations include a visual acuity test to establish an accurate prescription and a thorough health check of the entire eye. We use modern technology to examine your vision from the external surface to the back of the retina.
Which eye diseases do you screen for?
During every comprehensive eye examination, our doctors screen for the three primary risk factors: cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
We also inspect the retina for holes, tears, or detachments and evaluate the eye’s surface for conditions like dry eye or blepharitis. Early detection is our best tool for protecting your long-term sight.
Is dilation required for every exam?
We prioritize both clinical accuracy and patient comfort. By using Optos retinal imaging, we can often obtain an ultra-widefield view of the retina without dilation. However, our doctors may still recommend dilation on a case-by-case basis depending on your medical history.
Our team relies on Optos technology because it provides a superior view of your eye health with significantly less irritation.
Can I get a contact lens fitting on the same day?
Yes. We can complete a contact lens fitting and evaluation during the same visit as your comprehensive eye exam in about 95% of cases. Because we stock a wide variety of lenses, most patients can leave with their new contacts immediately.
Please mention your interest in contact lenses when booking so we can allocate the necessary time for your fitting.
What follows the examination?
When the clinical portion of your exam concludes, your doctor will introduce you to one of our opticians. This “warm handoff” ensures your doctor’s specific recommendations for your lifestyle and vision needs are communicated directly to the optical team. Once you select your frames, your custom lenses are typically ready for a final adjustment within two to three weeks.
How often should I schedule an eye exam?
We recommend a comprehensive eye exam once a year for patients over the age of five. For those in their 40s and 50s, or patients with underlying health and eye conditions, an annual visit is critical for monitoring subtle changes in vision and detecting potential issues before they progress.
